I go to the Gaithersburg Book Festival in search of enigmatic and reclusive science fiction author Scott Pruden. Weirdness ensues.

Yikes! Just realized it’s been a while since I posted. I was sick for the last week, which kind of took me out of commission. Before that, I was busy rehearsing for a magician/strongman act I did at the Great Labor Arts Exchange in Maryland on June 24.

The GLAE is a national conference devoted to using the arts for activism in general, and for union organizing in particular. I went to it a couple of years ago when I was involved in a labor dispute at the newspaper where I was working at the time, and I thought I’d give it another shot. It ain’t exactly headlining in Vegas, but what the hell. I had a good time. Here’s a video of my act, if you’re interested.

I explore the trend of sparkly, sexy vampires in American literature. And get my ass kicked.

OK, this is kind of an annual tradition for me — going to the Spoutwood Farm May Day Fairie Festival in Glen Rock, Pa., and making a video where I talk to the attendees about politics. I first did it on a whim before the 2008 presidential election, when I covered politics as a newspaper reporter. It went over so well that I started doing it every year. The folks who show up at the festival have a great sense of humor and are always willing to play along. This year was no exception.

I take a certain pride in imagining that this is the only entry in the entire blogosphere the includes both “Twig the Fairy” and “Federal Election Commission” as tags. Enjoy.

If you’re in the York, Pa., vicinity this weekend, Mike Argento will be making a couple of appearances to promote his book, “Don’t be Cruel.” As I’ve mentioned here before — if you find Carl Hiaasen a bit too dry and academic, this is the book for you. I lifted the following from Argento’s Facebook page:

“Book stuff this weekend: Saturday, I’ll be at Bookland on South Queen Street in York signing and whatnot. The store is at 2114 S. Queen and I’ll be there from 11 to 2. (Bookland has about the best magazine selection in town. So there’s that.) And on Sunday, from 10 to 1, I’ll be at the Spring Pennsylvania Music Expo at the Continental Inn at 2285 Lincoln Highway East in Lancaster. If you need to pick up a copy of Shatner signing Metallica covers, this is the place to be…”

And since he mentioned Shatner …

Thanks to my buddy Doug for forwarding this to me. This guy explains how local road signs actually include secret codes, which FEMA, NATO, and (Surprise surprise!) the U.N. use to identify the location of detention camps or helicopter landing sites or something. To me, this perfectly encapsulates what a lot of conspiracy theories are about: pattern recognition gone haywire. That’s the great thing about the Internet. You can get the full explanations — which are weirdly fascinating from a purely anthropological standpoint — without having to sit next the twitchy guy dressed all in camouflage fatigues at your local redneck bar, whom all the regulars know to avoid.

Merry Christmas from William Shatner

So William Shatner and I were hanging out at my apartment, knocking back a few heavily spiked eggnogs, when I asked if he’d be willing to record a holiday greeting for my friends. He assented. Bill’s swell that way. Here ya go!
